The new naphcare.com welcomes visitors and job seekers with eye catching images featuring content focused on our mission to provide cost-effective, proactive healthcare to the correctional population.  In addition to the fresh new look, naphcare.com is more user-friendly and easy to navigate.  

Along with the crisp new look, visitors to naphcare.com can take a more in-depth look at the team members behind the company and learn more about NaphCare’s services, including screenshots of NaphCare’s ONC CCHIT Meaningful Use Certified EHR system.  Visitors to the site will also find new features such as our new client testimonial section and an interactive client map displaying information about each of NaphCare’s client partners nationwide.

NaphCare Partners with Toys for Tots to Spread a Little Joy during this Holiday Season

NaphCare, Inc. is proud to support the Toys for Tots Foundation this holiday season.    As a continued effort to support our community, NaphCare employees were invited to bring new, unwrapped toys for children between the ages of 6 weeks to 13 years. 

“We are honored to partner with Toys for Tots each year; and are thankful for the opportunities we have to give gifts to children who would not otherwise receive gifts this holiday season, “said NaphCare’s Human Resources Director, Sheila Storch.  “Our continued relationship with Toys for Tots provides us an opportunity to make a small difference in our local community that may have lasting impact in the lives of the children we touch.”

NaphCare’s General Counsel Appointed to Alabama Tri-County Mental Health Authority Board

Congratulations to NaphCare’s General Counsel, Bradley J. Cain, on being recently appointed to serve as a Board member on the Jefferson-Blount-St. Clair County (JBS) Mental Health Authority’s Board of Directors for the City of Mountain Brook. 

As a part of the JBS Board of Directors, Mr. Cain will ensure funds are distributed properly to the Mental Health Authority.  This Board is comprised of appointed Alabama residents from twelve municipal governments which span across Jefferson, Blount and St. Clair counties.

The JBS Mental Health Authority is a regional, public, nonprofit corporation which serves the Jefferson, Blount and St. Clair counties in Alabama, with a totoal of more than 750,000 residents.  The Board is reponsible for planning, coordinating, and developing the system of mental health services for the entire region.  Some of the services they provide include intensive home-based therapy and case management for children, residential programs for adults, and vocational employment program.

Kissel Elected President of The National Alliance on Mental Illness Georgia Chapter

NaphCare’s Bill Kissel of Lilburn, GA on was recently elected as the state wide president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Georgia Chapter.  NAMI is Georgia’s largest mental health advocacy organization.  On May 21, 2011 the announcement was made at the Annual NAMI Georgia Conference.  Kissel currently serves as the National Director of Mental Health Operations for NaphCare Inc.  He previously served as Director of Health Services for the Georgia Department of Corrections for 10 years. At the conference’s open forum following the election, Kissel promised members he would work hard to continue the NAMI goal of ensuring Georgians with a mental illness have access to quality treatment along with NAMI’s partnership with the Georgia’s Sheriffs, whose focus is to reduce the number of persons with a serious mental illness in jails.

NaphCare Client Facilities Reaccredited by NCCHC

Two of NaphCare’s client facilities were recently reaccredited by the National Commission of Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC). Black Hawk County, Iowa and Montgomery County, Ohio both received 100% compliance of the essential NCCHC standards. These client facilities were surveyed in September of 2010 and received their reaccreditation on March 11, 2011.

NCCHC process uses external peer review to determine whether correctional institutions meet these standards in their provision of health services based on its Standards. Since the 1970’s, NCCHC has offered a voluntary health services accreditation program. Through this process, they give a professional judgment and assist in the improvement of services provided.

Brad Cain named Top Attorney by Birmingham Magazine

Brad Cain, Vice-President and General Counsel at NaphCare, was voted as a Top Attorney in the health care category. Mr. Cain is not only an asset to the NaphCare team, but is recognized by the Birmingham community as a leader. The Birmingham Magazine conducts its second annual review of who are the Top Attorneys in the region. This survey is the largest peer-review of attorneys conducted in the Birmingham area. Winners were categorized by practice and all votes were tabulated by an independent research company. We applaud his accomplishments.

Kissel works in conjunction with Georgia NAMI Taskforce to focus on correctional mental health issues

William P. Kissel, MS, CCHP, NaphCare’s Assistant Vice President of Mental Health, is chairing a taskforce of sheriffs, jail administrators and mental health professionals, from 6 metro Atlanta Jails to include the following sheriff’s departments; Clayton County ,Dekalb County, Fulton County, Gwinnett County, Newton County and Rockdale County. The taskforce, which was organized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Georgia Chapter, is focused on addressing the ever increasing issue of the incarceration of persons’ with a serious mental illness. Mr. Kissel is a board member of the NAMI, Georgia Chapter, as well as the Georgia State Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) advisory board chairperson.
Specific issues being addressed by the taskforce include; data collection, discharge planning, housing, supportive employment, substance treatment, access to state psychiatric hospitals, and training opportunities.
The initial meeting was held in September 2010 and hosted by Newton County Sheriff, Ezell Brown. The next meeting was held in December 2010 and was hosted by Fulton County Sheriff, Ted Jackson. The latest meeting was held in February 2011 and hosted by Gwinnett County Sheriff, Butch Conway. The next meeting will be in April and hosted by the Rockdale County Sheriff, Jeff Wigington.
Mr. Kissel says “The vision of these meetings is to provide access to common mental health issues that most jail facilities are overwhelmingly facing. These meetings are proving to be an effective mechanism of providing the sheriff departments’ of some of Georgia’s largest jails additional resources to assist in the management of the mentally ill population, as well as reducing recidivism.”

NaphCare’s Vice President and General Counsel inducted into the Leadership UAB Class of 2011

NaphCare’s Vice-President and General Counsel, Brad Cain, was selected to become a part of the prestigious class of 2011 to join together with proven leaders of our community to learn about UAB and the role it plays in Birmingham and the state of Alabama.

Each year, the University of Alabama at Birmingham selects members from their community to participate in Leadership UAB.  This organization represents a cross-section of Birmingham’s vibrant community of corporate, civic, and volunteer organizations.  These young professionals offer their support to the university as they get a deeper understanding of the university’s vision, mission, and its ongoing endeavours so that they may become ambassadors in the service of the university and Birmingham.  The group’s annual membership class consists of approximately 50 people between the ages of 25-40. 

Leadership UAB seeks to select proven leaders in the community to learn about the university and meet other young professionals.  Each member of the Class of 2011 was selected because he or she possesses the qualities of leadership that will  help move Birmingham and UAB forward as they act as what one might call a “communiversity,” working together toward a shared vision and goals.

Alabama Department of Corrections

NaphCare Inc., served the state of Alabama as the medical provider for the Department of Corrections from 2000-2003. The company was awarded the contract following a competitive bid process.

During the first few months of this partnership, the Department of Corrections was forced by federal mandate to add an additional 6,000 sentenced inmates to their already overcrowded system. These inmates were returned to the system from county jails, where they had been held. The medical contract and staffing design in place in 2000 were not designed for this change.

Without the ability to add needed clinical staff or restructure the contract accordingly, patient care suffered. NaphCare and the department reached an agreement to disengage the contract after the three-year term. The department issued a redesigned procurement with additional available funding, increased medical staffing requirements, and the new inmate population figures in place. NaphCare responded to this request for proposals. The contract was awarded to another vendor at a rate of nearly 40 percent more annual funding than the previous contract with NaphCare. The company and its leadership worked with the department to transition to the new medical provider.

As a company, NaphCare has carefully developed new quality assurance systems and designed technology to ensure care is provided timely, efficiently and effectively. With the proper systems in place, NaphCare has grown into a respected leader in correctional healthcare, serving the needs of more than 46 different correctional sites in the areas of dialysis treatment, pharmacy management, comprehensive medical services, mental and behavioral health treatment, off-site hospital management, and specialty services contracting.

These systems are now used on a daily basis to monitor care of more than 65,000 patients throughout the country. NaphCare’s clinical professionals serve government partners in county, state and federal agencies in 25 states.

Most recently, been entrusted with patient care in partnerships in the states of West Virginia, Florida, and Texas, including a new relationship providing medical care to youth under the supervision of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.

 

NaphCare Helping the Community – Florida Sheriff Youth Ranches

Jim McLane, CEO of NaphCare, believes that giving back to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is important because the money will go toward efforts that will directly impact and change the lives of the youth for a brighter future.

In an effort to support such a worthy cause, NaphCare recently made a donation to the organization at the Florida Sheriffs Association Mid-Winter Conference in Amelia Island, FL. This donation was given to assist in raising the money needed to keep many of the campuses open and to continue providing the food, education, and other services to the children.

“The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is so grateful to NAPHCARE for responding so quickly to the Sheriffs’ fundraising challenge. This gift will help the Youth Ranches raise young men and women who will face the future with a sense of direction, ability and hope.” ~ Roger Bouchard, President of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.
